Credit Where It Is Due

Credit Where It is Due

I like to make photographs, and I enjoy being praised for what I have done. But God teaches a different attitude, one of thankfulness and humility. He pointed that out to me recently. I DO NOT MAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS ALONE. I didn't create the light, or the technology which makes photography possible. I didn't buy my camera, it was a gift from my husband. I didn't give myself the ability to see through the camera in order to make an image which others find pleasing. It is right to use what I have been given to the best of my ability, but it is wrong to take credit for what I have not done. God made the light, the elements which are used to manufacture the camera, and the world from which these images come. He has given me gifts: people to teach me, eyes to see with, and a brain to process information. I am thankful for these gifts. He deserves all the praise, not I.

Capturing the Wild Balloon

In my last post I showed you a wild balloon which surprised me while I was walking last week. Today I want to share more of that experience...

Approach carefully so as not to scare it!

It's caught! The ribbon is tangled in the brush...

Please help!

Curious Ginger

What is this thing?

Who cares?!

If you are wondering, I untangled the ribbon and brought the balloon home. It is now tame, and living in my house!

"Ghostie-Kitty!"

This is Ghost.
He was abandoned by his former owner somewhere nearby.
When I first saw him, he was behind our house,
Prowling the woods.
He was shedding his fur for summer, and looked very rough.
He was hard to see, so I named him Ghost.

So he adopted us.
We soon learned that he was very friendly,
Unless you were another cat.
He is bold, and not afraid of dogs or raccoons.
He is a good hunter. However, he likes to catch birds.

He likes to go with me on my walks. The first shot was taken on a walk.
The rock he is standing on is in the middle of a small creek.
He was ready to go on, but I wanted to go back.

When we are walking, he falls behind sometimes.
Especially when going uphill, or if a tantalizing smell distracts him.
But if he gets "lost," he hollers.
Loudly.
Then I holler back, and wait. I meow, or call, "Ghostie-Kitty!"
He finds me, and all is well.

I have no idea why Ghost was abandoned,
He was obviously well cared for and loved before.
I think people do their pets a disservice in abandoning them.
But I am glad Ghost found and adopted us.

Wild Turkeys

Earlier this week Dina posted a picture of a domestic turkey as part of her Thanksgiving post. In the comments, she indicated she wasn't familiar with wild turkeys. Since we see them regularly, I volunteered a  post about them. So for Camera Critters I present Wild Turkeys.
The picture above and the last two were taken last August. The flock is made up of adult birds, probably hens, and half-grown chicks. I don't know if there are any toms here, and I don't have any pictures of the toms showing off for the hens, so you'll have to do without!

This one shows two toms--the ones to the left which have beards! Turkey beards are made of special feathers which look more like hair and hang from the breast. Hens sometimes have beards, but not frequently. This picture was taken in October.

Turkeys are quite alert. These are carefully watching something...

one of our cats, who is trying very hard to look like he is NOT watching them! Our other cat has twice (that I know of) caught and eaten a turkey about the size of the smaller ones here.
I learned about wild turkeys at this site:  http://www.nwtf.org/all_about_turkeys/wild_turkey_facts.html . They are interesting birds!

Molly McButter, Finest of Felines

This is Molly McButter. She came to us a grown cat, already spayed and named. We had agreed to keep her while her owner, our daughter's friend, went out of state. When the friend returned, Molly went back to live with her. Finally though, she was ours for good.

The first thing Molly did when released into our house was disappear into the crawl space, and we didn't see her again for about three months! I don't know what she lived on during that time--probably mice--but eventually she got confident (or hungry) enough to venture out to the cat dish. Then she let me pet her, and then we were friends.

She was very soft and silky. She loved to be held and petted, and would purr like crazy and knead with her paws. I still have T-shirts with claw holes to prove it! If I was sitting down, she was in my lap-- usually I didn't complain! She also loved catnip, which is a weed here, and got very silly when she imbibed!

We had this sweet pet for a number of years before she became sick. We enjoyed her antics and her affectionate nature. But it became clear that trying to prolong her life would not be a good idea, and she went one more time to the vet. She is buried now in my flowerbed, and catnip is growing on her grave. I will miss her always.
