Birch Bark

Birch trees are beautiful. They always look clean to me, with their white bark which glows in almost every light. But just like everything else in the world, the birch needs periodic renewal. The leaves fall and are replaced by new ones each spring; and the bark has to be renewed as the tree grows. This shows papery old bark pulling away from its replacement. Spring is here!

Snow Drops!

Spring is here!

For those who aren't familiar with snow drops, they are very small flowers, about 3 inches high. They bloom very early, even through snow. We don't have any snow now, and the weather is very warm for February. I was out raking yesterday when I saw these. Two days before they were no where to be seen!

Spring for Ruby Tuesday

I have been searching for signs of spring. We have had an open winter with little snow and mild temperatures, but it is winter, and I'm ready for spring. My snowdrops aren't up yet, the buds on the trees are still closed. Sigh.

Well, these little red knobs are a sure sign that spring is nearly here! They are rhubarb sprouts, peeking out to see if it's time to grow. I spotted them yesterday as I was returning from my walk. In May they will look like this:

The stems get really long, and the leaves are huge.  They are beautiful plants.

Bleeding Heart

Ellievellie asked about the plant in my Sun Tea post. It is called bleeding heart. Here is a picture:
It is a perennial that gets rather large, and is very graceful, especially while blooming. However, this is not IN the tea.
I think I misunderstood her question!!
