Credit Where It Is Due

Credit Where It is Due

I like to make photographs, and I enjoy being praised for what I have done. But God teaches a different attitude, one of thankfulness and humility. He pointed that out to me recently. I DO NOT MAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS ALONE. I didn't create the light, or the technology which makes photography possible. I didn't buy my camera, it was a gift from my husband. I didn't give myself the ability to see through the camera in order to make an image which others find pleasing. It is right to use what I have been given to the best of my ability, but it is wrong to take credit for what I have not done. God made the light, the elements which are used to manufacture the camera, and the world from which these images come. He has given me gifts: people to teach me, eyes to see with, and a brain to process information. I am thankful for these gifts. He deserves all the praise, not I.

The Geese on Fry Creek

Here I am, back at my favorite spot for taking pictures.
I visit this place often!
These Canada Geese are feeding, swimming among and casting some marvelous reflections!
This is an uncropped image of the same area. There were other goose families on this inlet, also.
Soon they will start practicing for their fall migration.

Wet Blue Reflections

The small seasonal stream is flowing now.
It runs over rocks
Around clumps of grass and fir cones
And by cedar fronds,
Reflecting bits of blue sky and white clouds
All along its course.

Remembering Autumn

When I have been walking this winter,
I have occasionally noticed some remnant of autumn.
The earliest of these was taken last November;
the most recent this month.

Watery Bokeh

I recently learned what "bokeh" means. For those who haven't learned this word yet, here is a definition from Wikipedia:
"In photography, bokeh is the blur, or the aesthetic quality of the blur, in
out-of-focus areas of an image, or "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points
of light." ...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh

I don't claim to have done this on purpose. I didn't.
But I like the shot very much.
The bokeh gives it a dreamy, not quite real quality that appeals to me.

Wet Bench, Dry Bench

We traveled  over four thousand miles in the first two weeks of this month so we could visit with our son, daughter, and son-in-law. It had to be a pretty fast trip, so we mostly used interstate highways. These two shots were made at rest stops along these roads; the first in Wyoming and the second in Montana. We saw a lot of rain in Wyoming, so that bench is dripping and partly reflected in the wet cement. If you click on the picture, you can see the drops better. The second bench isn't actually wet, but the sky was threatening to change that!
Rest stops are state maintained, and vary considerably in appearance from one state to another, but all have restrooms and most have drinking water. They are sometimes the only places for taking care of business for many miles and are a welcome break when your life is confined to a compact car!

This post is for Watery Wednesday and for Paulie who loves benches. Click on over to see more!

Watery Rainbow

This is a fish in our aquarium. The rainbow is reflected from the inside. I thought that it was a wonderful effect, and even more wonderful was that I was able to capture it! Except for reducing the size of the file, this is unedited. It is my submission for Mellow Yellow Monday, Ruby Tuesday, and Watery Wednesday. I hope everyone is having a great week!

Tree in a Tub Over Water

This is a tiny tree. It lives in a big concrete tub which has been placed on a bridge where pedestrians trek. That is why I have taken it from my trove for ABC Wednesday.
The bridge spans a river, which naturally is full of water. This particular morning the water was steaming up into the colder air, and above, behind the tree's top, a low cloud of water vapor made a good backdrop. All this water is why I have also listed this in Watery Wednesday.  Drop by these two fun memes to see more Ts and water.

Aquarium Fish

I don't know how this happened...I was messing around, taking pictures of the fish in our aquarium. This shot was very pink, but I could see that there was something more. I used Picasa to edit it, making a monochrome, and ended up with this negative-like image. Here is a color close-up of the same fish:

It is not good focus, I have a hard time with extreme close-ups. The fish are called Lemon Tetras.

Fun with Water

These two kids had no idea I was lurking with my camera! The water is in the bucket, and it's soapy.
What a great way to spend a summer afternoon!

Steam Train

I had an appointment today, so I drove into town. My route crosses a long bridge over a lake. As I came to the end of the crossing, I noticed a group of people with cameras standing together looking east toward the railroad bridge which is some distance away. I thought that they might be part of a photography class...

On the way home, I saw more people with cameras. They were scattered along the pedestrian bridge and again all looking toward the railroad bridge. I wondered some more about why, but it just was not a good place to stop.

I turned off the highway down a scenic road thinking I'd stop and take some pictures. This is one.

Where this road crosses the railroad tracks there were cars parked along both sides and more people with cameras. I decided to ask a question or two, so I pulled over and rolled down my window. "Excuse me, what's going on?" I asked.
"There's a steam train coming along, and everyone wants to take a picture of it." I was told.
"Oh, thanks!" I said, and I drove off.
After crossing the tracks, I turned down the road which parallels the railroad for a couple of miles; it was my regular way home. But I had my camera, and a steam train doesn't go by every day...I started looking for likely places to pull off, places that might give a good view of a passing train. I didn't want to go too far, because I knew that this road crossed another near a railroad crossing, and I expected I would find lots of people there. I didn't want a lot of people in my pictures.
I found a nice spot, pulled over a little, got out and waited. I actually could hear the steam whistle in the distance. My view was through a few yellowing birch trees looking down to the tracks. I thought it would do.
As I was waiting, some other people, but not too many, stopped nearby and found themselves vantage points. Two cars stopped and the drivers asked me what was going on. Waiting was kind of fun!
Then I heard the train in earnest, whistle blowing and the rumble of wheels. I aimed. It got louder and louder.

Then suddenly, there it was! I took a shot, hesitated a moment, then took several more as an Amtrak passenger train, complete with observation car at the end, sped by. Here is what I saw, straight from the camera. I hope you enjoy the sight!
